Don't drop before I shop

All of this working is really getting in the way of my ability to shop! I left work early today, which means it was 6:30 but as I walked by the GAP and Ann Taylor's Loft, I just wasn't in the mood to go inside and see what they had. Can you believe it?

As I entered my apartment building I was impressed by the thought that it was the first day since I've been there that I haven't spent any money. I brought my own coffee to work (brewed up special with the french press Christa gave me - yum!), brought leftovers for lunch and didn't even head down to Starbucks for an afternoon pick-me-up.

It was all for not, though, because as I was walking up my roomate was walking down and heading out to grab some grub. Why not check out the fine dining establishments in town with someone that's been around for awhile? Granted the term fine here is relative and I ended up with something about eight steps above taco bell. A good place to grab some food, but still by no means a classy establishment.

Although..

when the 4/5/6 isn't running and I'm forced to walk to work, that isn't really convenient. This actually happened this morning. Due to power outagges and the inability to signal oncoming trains, my most reliable means of getting to work was out of commission.

The paper people (people who stand outside of the subway stop handing out free papers. How do they get paid? Not quite sure, but I have pondered for some time now) were announcing that the subway wasn't working. I did a double check to see what day it was (we are quite close to april 1st). But no, this was no joke. The subway I depend on was not operating. Most everyone decided to take the bus. When I saw one roll by it was like a vertical sardines can so I decided to walk.

About a half mile down to work (would be about a 1.5 mile walk plus/minus) I decided to jump on the F train. It would have been a better story had I walked to work the whole way, but I couldn't resist the easy way out. It saved me like 20 blocks!

A little free time - for a fee

What word best describes living in NYC? Energetic, variety, choice, fast, and oh yeah - expensive - but I was actually thinking - convenient. This week alone, I was able to partake in some of the pleasures of delivery. Nope, not just delivery of like a slew of different restaurants (although I have been enjoying that too) but I can even get my groceries and laundry delivered!

Acutally, I didn't have my laundry delievered but it was an option. I dropped my dirty clothes off at the cleaners just below me on my way to work and on my way home stopped by to pick up the clothes all nice and fresh and folded. I must say I was a bit skeptical beforehand, but if I don't have to sit there and contend with the process, why not pay by the pound to have someone else do it? I think it was something like $10, for what might have been 1.5 to 2 loads. All in all, a good deal considering I didn't have to hassle with quarters or waste my time.

I did, on the otherhand have my groceries delivered. If I wasn't walking so much, I would swear I was turning lazy!

Ratte infested building

It's official! I hauled my most precious belongings (as fit in a ten foot U-haul) down from Connecticut to the big city today. Granted, I left behind some of those things like yearbooks that I want to keep but just don't want to keep with me. Space is limited here, you know.

The care package

Mom and dad aren't here this weekend to send me off. (pretty convenient, if you ask me seeing as how I need help loading and unloading the truck.) But they did leave behind a little care package. Tissues, oatmeal, paper towels and laundry detergent. What happended to the care packages from college days? My mom would send in a pringles can? Individually wrapped cookies between individually wrapped money. You never knew what would be next - could be chocolate chip, could be a five dollar bill.

Ohh and I can't forget about the quarters I got before I left for college, must have been $30. Of course she intended for me to use them on laundry, which I always did in the beginning. Towards the end of the semester, when my spending cash was low, I was faced with the choice between beer and laundry. Does anyone have to stop and think on that one? Even at the bar, I'd lay em out like poker chips. I'd say "if she only knew", but I'm sure she did.
